Philosophy

So often, what we truly long for is obscured by the hurts from our past, and the expectations we place unnecessarily upon ourselves about what we are supposed to want and how life is supposed to be. And yet our goals are simultaneously supported by triumphs, ideals, strengths, and dreams. If we are lucky, we also have the support of friends, family, and our communities. We bring all of these things to our relationships with others, and with ourselves. These parts of us are what make our lives vibrant and satisfying, but they can also get in our way of understanding others and finding acceptance for ourselves. As a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, I help clients to find self-acceptance by working through their social and family histories and resolving past relationship wounds, while simultaneously finding and using the many resources, relationships, and personal strengths that will enable them to set goals and go after them effectively. I use family systems, dialectical behavioral therapy, and somatic approaches in my work with individuals. When working with couples I use primarily an emotionally focused therapy approach, augmented by family systems.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself as I am, then I change ….we cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are, until we thoroughly accept what we are. Then change seems to come about almost unnoticed.”
– Carl Rogers
