Teenage Depression

Approximately 18 percent of teenagers struggle with mental illness such as depression or substance abuse. Often teenage depression therapy is needed, and starting depression therapy early is best. “These are the best years of your life… enjoy them!” This is a phrase teenagers hear so often from parents, teachers, and many other adults during the adolescent years, yet when this does not match their experience it often can leave teens feeling isolated and bleak about the future. Adolescence can be a time riddled with identity challenges, conflict with friends and parents, pressure and on-going changes, which can leave adolescents feeling quite overwhelmed, blue, or even depressed.

Teenage depression therapy is confidential for your teenager, who have the right to their own privacy file in therapy. The counsellor will not report to their parents without the teenager’s written permission, with the aim of creating a safe counselling space. Teenage therapy is a place to express your thoughts and feelings, get answers to everyday questions, and practice new ways of engaging in life. Teenage depression therapy in particular aims to provide new ways of coping with negative thoughts and feelings.

Symptoms of depression vary from person to person. However some signs that an adolescent may be depressed include extreme or uncharacteristic mood swings, difficulty concentrating, intensified feelings of low self-esteem, ongoing feelings of exhaustion or an excessive need for sleep, or suicidal thoughts (http://www.canmat.org/cme-depression-depression-in-adolescents.php).
