5 Ways to Cope with Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is a psychological condition that affects many mothers that have just given birth. People usually associate these with the baby blues. Some new mothers, however, may experience postpartum depression, a condition similar to baby blues in a very extreme way.

Symptoms and Impact of Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is more than just getting the baby blues. It’s a condition that should not be taken lightly. For mothers who have just given birth, the most common symptoms of postpartum depression are the following:

  • Feelings of depression and hopelessness
  • Emotional withdrawal or avoiding contact with other people
  • Changes in sleep patterns either by getting more or less sleep
  • Generalized anxiety disorder: Constantly having low energy levels
  • Intrusive emotions, like anxiety, anger, or fear
  • Sudden changes in mood and emotions
  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm, or harming the baby

Other symptoms include lack of interest in activities, changes in thought patterns, intense fear, appetite loss, and more.

Postpartum depression also has many psychological and physiological effects on the mother. As such, its impact should never be ignored. Many aspects of life can become affected. Among the most significantly impacted are:

  • The mother’s physical health and psychological well-being
  • Proper care for the baby
  • The relationship between the mother, baby, and others

To minimize these negative impacts, there must be proper psychological care for the mother. It can be challenging but is doable when managed properly.

Dealing with Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression can drive mothers to do whatever means necessary in order to cope. However, only healthy ways of coping should be prioritized. Among the best ways of dealing with postpartum depression are the following:

1.     Stay physically healthy.

As cliché as it may seem, a sound mind resides in a healthy body. Studies show that staying physically fit can help with the symptoms of postpartum depression. Eating healthy and exercising regularly are both very highly recommended.

2.   Get plenty of rest.

A lack of sleep is correlated with severe symptoms of postpartum depression. Getting enough sleep is essential to prevent this.

3.     Make some “me time.”

As a new mother, you want to give your baby your undivided attention. It is, however, equally important to pamper yourself. Find time to do so, and this will help you keep mentally fit.

4.     Reach out to your loved ones.

As much as you may want to socially isolate, it is simply not healthy. Surround yourself with people that can emotionally support you during this tough time.

5.      See a therapist

Seeing a therapist is the best option. It’s not an ordeal you have to go through alone. A licensed therapist may just be able to help.
